DePIN Energy Independence: When the Sun Powers Your Servers
Building distributed infrastructure and computing nodes is a confident step towards complete digital freedom. But true autonomy begins where the centralized power outlet ends.
From One Node to a Data Center: When Is It Time to Count Kilowatts?
Installing a powerful solar-battery station for a single server or test machine doesn’t make much sense — a standard grid can handle that easily.
A completely different calculation comes into play when your fleet grows to 4–6 production machines. Considering that a single high-performance computing node under load consumes on average about 3 kW, the total infrastructure power surpasses the 15–18 kW mark.
1–2 servers are still no problem for the city grid. But when your fleet scales up, electricity bills begin to noticeably impact the project’s economics. No matter how favorable your current tariff is, a zero-cost tariff from the sun is always nicer. At some point, self-generation ceases to be just a tech experiment and becomes a strictly pragmatic solution.
Geography of the Sun: Where Does Autonomous Generation Yield the Greatest Profit?
Unfortunately, our planet is illuminated unevenly by the sun. In northern latitudes, solar panels serve only as auxiliary elements due to long winters and cloudy days.
The most efficient and cost-effective zone for autonomous computing centers lies in the area of high insolation: within the belt approximately 30–35 degrees north and south of the equator. Here, the year-round influx of solar energy allows inverters and panels to operate at full capacity, ensuring stable equipment operation 365 days a year.
